Lets consider Galatians 4:9-10:
But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage? 10You observe days and months and seasons and years. 11I am afraid for you, lest I have labored for you in vain.
Today’s Christianity has decided that Paul is expressing his concern to his readers in Galatia (and for any of us today) who might be tempted to actually want to obey The Scriptures! “NO WAY!” You say! “Yes, Way!” I reply! Let me explain. Paul has been interpreted as teaching that believing Gentiles are NOT to obey the Law of GOD ever since the cross of MESSIAH. They say that the Law has become “obsolete, useless, done away with, fulfilled, replaced by the Law of JESUS, etc…” And they site Scriptures like Galatians 4:9-10 to smugly substantiate those claims. But is that what Paul is referring to? Well, lets think about this and see…
Lets ask a few questions:
- Who is Paul writing this letter to? Answer: Believing (in JESUS) Gentiles.
- Were these (now) believing Gentiles raised in The Law of GOD since birth? Answer: Probably not.
- What kind of belief system were they most likely raised in? Answer: Godlessness of some kind, whether it was a form of secularism, paganism or idolatry.
- Then how can it be that Paul is so concerned that these once godless Gentiles are turning back to The Law of GOD, seeing that they never “knew GOD” or followed HIS Law in the first place??? See verse 8. How can they “turn again” to something that they never had? Answer: Because Paul is not saying what today’s Christianity is claiming that he is saying!!!
- Think about it: Isn’t Paul really admonishing these believing Galatians for beginning to reject the Truth of GOD’S Word, (HIS LAW) in their consideration of going back into a form of lawlessness that is established by men? Let me explain further: You see, from GOD’S perspective, whether it is godless paganism (like from where these Galatians came from) or “a form of godliness, denying it’s power”(2Tim3:5), that the bible exposes as religious, non-biblical dogma propagated by men in their efforts to try and proselytize these Galatians (or you and I today) into their “additions to / subtractions from” GOD’S Word, it doesn’t matter. To GOD any man-made practice, tradition, custom, etc. that is not endorsed by The WORD of GOD is just another form of lawlessness. And lawlessness IS a serious thing for professing believers to be turning to once again…
